How Much Weekly Workout Recovery Time Do You Need?
No matter who you are or what kind of exercise you do, recovery time is always necessary in a workout routine. It is during periods of rest, not during exercise, that your body makes the adaptations that lead to gains in endurance, strength and speed. Without proper rest, you will lessen the benefits of your workout and increase the likelihood of overtraining and injury. A general rule is to get at least 48 hours of rest between workout cycles, but the real amount depends on your age, gender and fitness level, as well as the frequency and intensity of your workouts.
Fitness Level and Rest
One of the most influential factors in determining how much rest you need is your level of fitness. For instance, Olympic athletes do not take as many rest days as those just beginning a workout regimen, but even athletes at the highest level do have to take time to recover. If you are just starting a weekly schedule, you should leave four to five days a week open for recovery. At an intermediate level, this can shrink to three or four days of rest. Advanced athletes can train almost every day with only one or two rest days per week.
